Taylor, with Armstrong in, kept up his bright display though the field was closed in to stop run-getting. Douglas took the ball and slowed the scoring down. At 288 he got Armstrong caught behind the wicket, and Taylor also fell to him. Gregory and Oldfield kept the score moving till the former was stumped. When MacDonald came in he hit the bowlers all over the place. He was caught once of a no-hall, and was missed later on. His partnership with Oldfield added 51 in half an hour. The innings occupied 325 minutes. When England went in again Gregory and MacDonald took the bowling to Russell and Brown. The latter was missed from a hot return to the former. When the crack bowlers could not shift the batsmen they were not persevered with, and the game degenerated into a farce, allowing the batsmen to improve their tost averages at the expense of the inferior bowling. « The attendance was 14,000. |
