Tlio Llautere Rifle Club fired a match with the Paraparaumu Club on the latter's range on Saturday for the Field Shield. Tlic trophy was bold by 'i'araparaumu, but Hautcrc managed to turn the tables, and. won by 50' points.
The Levin Corps of the Salvation Army held its anDual harvest thanksgiving meetings at the ball in Bath street yesterday under tho leadership oi Staff-Ca'fain McAuley. The hall and stage were beautifully decorated with grain, and ranged along the front of the stage was a profuse display of the finite of* the soil. There were large congregations at all the services, which were a great success. Tlie StaffCaptain was a padre at the front, and lie interspersed his, addresses with somo touching reminiscences of tho Front. The services were supported by the singing of a strong choir. The festival will be continued tliis evening, when an excellent programme will be supplied by Captain and Mrs Goffui, supported by the Foxton Band.
The question of surfacemen's wages came in for considerable discussion at the Horowhenua County Council on .Saturday, tho matter being dealt with in committee. It was finally decided to make increases and that members of the Council staff also participate, the proposals being contained in the following motion moved by Cr Mclavvoy, seconded by Cr Ryder: That tl; e roadmen's wages be raised by 1/6 per day, the foreman by 10s por week, engine-driver by 5s per week, liorsc drivers Is per dny; that the qssistant clerk's 'salary be raised by £20 ppr year; that the ranker be allowed commission of sixpence each on sl\ ) and cattle dogs, Is on hoim; find si ti'ting dogs, tax to be collected before June 30 in each current year, such rise in wages and salaries "to take effect from April 1, 1920. An amendment bv Cr Harkness, seconded by Cr Ooley, that wages bo raised to 13s per day was lost.
