LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL
THIS ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING. The Mayor (Mr 1?. R. G-ardener) presided over ln<sf night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council. Tim councillors present were Messrs E. 8. Lancaster, R. Prouse, H. U. France, M. Fosella, F. F. Parker, D. Mallllw>ii, 1). Hannan, P. Arcus ! and C. Blenkhorn. AUTOMATIC STi; l-J'T-I.AMP LIGHTING. Apropos to a paragraph in the gas manager's report, a discussion ensued as to whether it would be advisable to have tluve put on to the street lamps of l.cvin . It was stated !>v tho Mayor that the total cost of installing the sysiem would be some C7O. and if could he carried out gradually ai a cost of Clo a year). The arc lamps could he fixed for 30s eaHi. "When the system was complete there would be a saving of CIO a year effected through doing away with the need for a lamplighter. This cost the borough the sum mentioned. The advisahleness of having a report on the latest improvements was mooted by Cr. ITannan. To this Cr. Lancaster and the Mayor answered that the council was losing money by the delays that had been experienced. Discussion had been going on for two years, and the gas committee had been investigating the invention. Eventually i( was unanimously decided "that Mr Shaw be authorised to go to Wellington to inspect the automatic gn« extinguisher and report at the next meeting of the council." GAS STOVES.
Councillor Mathcson expressed a hope 111:11 mi early demonstration of gas stove cookery would be given in Levin. This suggestion was favourably commented upon by tho meeting, and it was resolved that the gas manager, during his coming visit to Wellington, do whatever ho could to arrange for a demonstration being given at an early date, ill Levin, by an expect. As a. matter of fact the carrier had had to employ four men and eleven horses on Christmas ICve to transport three families (twelve persons) to the beach. In the circumstances the carrier had thought L'O was a fair charge, but eventually he reduced the charge to CI, though he had harl to make four trips Incidental to the discussion that ensued, a legal opinion from the council's solicitors was read, to the effort, that tho council had not sufficient legal standing to enable it to make effective bylaws to govern such cases. In view of this opinion. Councillor Fosella's motion, adjourned from last meeting, was rejected by six votes to three. ■SWIMMING CARNIVAL. On the suggestion of Councillor Blenkhorn. it wars resolved to arrange a swimming carnival it} connection with the baths; also to take up a public subscription (limited to one shilling per subscriber) for tho provision ol trophies. A committee of the council is to confer with one liom the l.evin iSwimrnnig Club.
