LIFE-SAVING SHIELDS

Napier Intermediate School

The presentation of the Vigor Brown and Knapp life-saving shields, for schoolboy and schoolgirl competition, took place at the Napier intermediate School on Tuesday. Mr J. Vigor Brown, president of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society, presented his own shield and the Knapp shield on behalf of Mrs Knapp. The Intermediate school teams had been successful in winning both shields, which had come into competition for the first time in six years. Mr Vigor Brown, in making the presentation to the winning teams, congratulated them on their success, and gave an interesting outline of life-sav-ing work in Hawke’s Bay during the 25 years of the Vigor Brown Shield’s existence.

Mr A. W. H. King, chairman of the executive of the Hawke’s Bay branch, also congratulated the teams on their success, and paid a high tribute to the work of Mr E. W. Willis, who had been responsible for the tuition of the pupils in the art. Mr H. G. Johnson, headmaster, said that he was pleased to see the representatives of the Life Saving Society present, and thanked them for their attendance. w A number of awards were also presented to successful children by Mr Brown.
