OBITUARY

Mrs. Eliza E. Purnell

By the death of Mrs. Eliza Elizabeth Purnell, widow of the late. James Purnell, at Auckland, in her ninetieth year, New Zealand loses another of its oldest residents. The deceased lady was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry funner, of New Plymouth, and was born in Courtney street on July 25, 1847. In 1866 she was married to Mr. Purnell by the late Rev. John Whitely, who later met his death at the hands of the hostile natives. With their family Mr. and Mrs. Purnell went to Wanganui in 1875, residing continuously there until 1904. Mr. Purnell held the position of town clerk for more than a quarter of a century, and the family were held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. They were closely associated with Trinity Church, Mr. Purnell being an office-bearer and Mrs. Purnell an _ ardent and active worker in the various activities of the church. In 1904 they took up their residence in Auckland, Mr. Purnell predeceasing Mrs. Purnell 10 years ago. The surviving members of the family are Mr. James H. Purnell, Wanganui; Mr. Alfred C. Purnell, Auckland; Mr. Fred Purnell, Marton; and Mrs. Lucy M. Hutchens, Auckland. There are 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren

Dr. Casement G. Aickin

An Auckland telegram reports the death of Dr. Casement Gordon Aickin, aged 55, at his residence, Symonds street. He was one of Auckland’s best Known surgeons. He had been ill for a week and died of pneumonia shortly alter midnight. He had a brilliant academic career at the Auckland University and graduated at Otago in 1909. He gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, London, in 1911. During the war he was on the New Zealand General Hospital Staff, London. He leaves a widow, two sons and one daughter.
