LEAGUE FOOTBALL

Mt. Albert Beats Hawke’s Bay Team 20 POINTS TO 11 , An interesting series for League fol- | lowers was provided on Saturday, when i two Mt. Albert teams appeared on League Park, Napier, to try conclusions I with a Hawke’s Bay side and the Tara- . dale club. Both games provided play , of as high a standard as has been seen ; in Napier during the season, and honours were even at the conclusion of the day, Hawke’s Bay going down to the Mt. Albert senior side while Taradale defeated the reserve seniors from Auckland The main attraction of the day was a fine match played at a rattling pace throughout, but Mt. Albert played superior football to run out winners bv 20 points to 11. Points came for the most part from individual efforts, but the match also provided thrills in the way of concerted back movements by each side. The teams took the field as follow; Hawke's Bay.—Cushing, Blake, MeGlashan, Smith, Hawea, Staples, Brown, Rewi, Purcell, Murray, Bliss, Tutu, Ponga. Mt. Albert.—J. fchultz, Watkins, Young, L. Shultz, Patterson, Halsey. Dunn, Satherley, Elwin, Shadbolt, Gunning, Paterson, Herring. Hawke's Bay took the offensive tn the kick-off, and after a short period of forward play McGlashan secured on the half-way line and carried play downfield in a great run that reached the line before he was grassed heavily by Shultz. An infringement by Mt. Albert presented Smith with a difficult shot at the goal from the sideline, but his kick fell short, and Mt. Albert cleared. The visitors then took a turn on attack, and the whole of their roarguard combined in a brilliant attack on the Bay line. The rush was looking dangerous when Smith secured the ball and cleared with a nice run that brought play back into neutral territory. Len Shultz returned to the attajk, however, and the end of a fast run found Mt. Albert three points np. Satherley converted. Gunning then showed a pretty turn of speed to run through the Bay defence and score well out. Satherley’s kick failed to make the distance to the goal. Staples then made a good run for Hawke’s Bay, only to lose possession on the line. Bewi, however, was at hand to snatch up the ball and score. Brown converted. Peterson dummied his way across from a scrum on tile Hawke’s Bay line, and grounded the ball in the corner just as he was tackled. Satherley’g kick failed, and the teams left the field at half-time with the score: Mt. Albert 11 Hawke’s Bay 5 The Schultz brothers gained the next points for Mt. Albert upon resumption of play, when the full-back, J. Schultz, stopped a rush by the Bay forwards by gathering in the ball from their toes, and then speedily turned defence into attack by making a brilliant run downfield right to the opposing line, where he transferred infield to L. Shultz, who scored. Satherley missed the kick. Another try followed from forward play near the Bay line when Gunning went over in a handy position. Wilson’s kick failed to raise the flags. The same player repeated his performance right after the kick-off, when he run behind the posts to score. Satherley missed a simple kick. Ponga then turned on some brillaint play for Hawke’s Bay when, with only a few minutes to go, he secured from a ruck and hurled himself across the line for a good try in which his weight was used to full advantage. Cushing missed the kick, but in the last minute of the game Ponga again scored, to make the final tally: Mt. Albert 20 Hawke’s Bay 31 Mr G. Bradbury refereed. WIN FOR TARADALE Reserve Team Defeated in Curtain-Raiser Taradale turned on some good play to defeat the Mt. Albert senior reserve team in the curtain-raiser to the main attraction, the final score being 16 points to eight. Play was bright and attractive, but Taradale were definitely superior throughout the game. Cranch opened the scoring when he wont across for Mt. Albert near the posts, his try being converted. Taradale retaliated when Mapuhi secured and, running into position, sent his backs away for Gibbs to cross. Farquhar converted with a good kick. Three further tries were scored, Hepburn converting one of them, and Mt. Albert alos scored again in the closing stages of tho game to make the final score 16—8. Mr B, Reid was tho referee.
