HOCKEY MATCHES

Hawke’s Bay Wins Against Poverty Bay SENIORS AND JUNIORS Two representative hockey matches were played on Nelson Park, Hastings, on Saturday, between Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay won both senior and junior matches. The ground was fast but bumpy and the visitors took some time to accustom themselves to the conditions. Both games were played in the very best spirit, and though Hawke’s Bay had an easy win in the junior match, they were only able to win the senior match by scoring in the last minute of the game. The teams in the senior match were as follow:—

Poverty Bay: Chadwick, Le Bas, Stacey, File, Gavin, Douglas, Adams, Prentice, Jones, Stitchbury, and McNab.

Hawke’s Bay: Bush, Blumont, MeErlich, Rouse, Haraki, Hakoro, Hayes, Fulton (captain), McKay, Tau Hemapo and Hawke’s Bay had tlie best of the opening stages, Fulton and McCutcheon having unsuccessful shots which missed the mark. Chadwick saved two hard shots from McKay, but Tau Hemapo opened the scoring with a flick shot from close in, and a minute later Hayes netted after a good combined rush — Hawke’s Bay 2, Poverty Bay nil. Poverty Bay rallied, Prentice goaling. The same player evened the scores when he found the net with a nice shot after Jones had made an opening.— Poverty Bay 2, Hawke’s Bay’ 2. Poverty Bay took the lead when McNab ran Jones into position for a score.—Poverty Bay 3, Hawke’s Bay

The home team strove hard to equelise the scores, Hayes just missing on two occasions. Half-time was taken with the visitors in the lead. Both sides played brighter hockey after the change-over. Stitchbury scored for Poverty Bay, but McKay, who was playing a great game, evened the scores by netting twice in succession. Hawke’s Bay had all the best of matters in the closing stages, but the defence held them up until McKay iroke through right on the call of time to score the winning goal, tho final vhistle sounding with the scores: Hawke’s Bay 5 Poverty Bay 4 Messrs T. Atkinson and B. Mardon a ere the umpires. JUNIOR MATCH The junior match, which was played is a curtain-raiser to the senior match, resulted in an easy win for Hawke’s Bay, the final scores being Hawke’s Bay 5, Poverty Bay 2. Kronk scored all five goals for Hawke’s Bay, and Halbert and Thompson each scored a goal for Poverty Bay. Messrs Rouse and Mardon umpired. V'ERCOE CUP MATCH Te Awa Defeats Hutt In a match for the Verco« Cup at Nelson Park, Napier, on Saturday, the Te Awa women's team defeated Upper Hutt by five goals to nil. Last yeai the same two teams met in a friendly game for the cup at Upper Hutt, when Upper Hutt were victorious by four goals to three. On this occasion as the two teams took the field they were received with cheers. They formed a striking but pretty contrast in uniforms, those of the Upper Hutt team being bright red tunic and skirt, with two-inch gold band at the bottom of the skirt, while To Awa’ s uniform ut white blouse, black skirt, and black and white cap also looked well. As the game progressed it was seen tht Te Awa, playing good hockey, were superior in most departments of the game and had a territorial advantage during most of the time. This was largely due to the fine play ol the Te Awa backs, whose stick work was superior and who were quicker at turning defence into attack. Individually there were some very good players in the Upper Hutt team, but they did not get so much of the ball, and when they developed an attacking movement they met an impenetrable defence .the Te Awa goalie saving a score on two or three occasions. The game was fast throughout, and though To Awa was the better team the superiority was hardly as marked as the score inught seem to indicate. Misses H. Edwards (3), J. Trotter and M. Simmons were the S' orers for Te Awa, the first-named playing a particularly sound game all through. Messrs M. H. Wellington (of Wellington) and Rex. Vercoe were the referees. INTER-CLUB MATCH An inter-club match between the Defence (Gisborne) uud Scinde (Napier) Hockey Clubs was played on Nelson Park, Napier, as a preliminary to the Vercoe Cup women ’s match. Neither team was at its full strength, nor was the game one which could be called good. There were occasional flashes of good play, and Defence seemed to have the Hashes rather more often than Scinde did, but their shooting was poor and quite a number of good attempts at goal just missed because the goalmouth was nut exactly where the shooter thought it was. Scinde won by three goals to one, Barlow, Burns and Manning netting for Scinde and Marshall lor Defence, Messrs S. Crook and Loader refereed.
