H.B. Board Meeting

Matters in connection with primary education in the Hawke’s Bay education district were dealt with at to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. Present: Messrs G. A. Maddison (chairman), H. S. M. Quigley, C. Lassen, J. Wanchope, C. R. Sainsbury, C. H. Critchley, E. H. Baker, R. C. Wright, T. A. Rowe, T. A. Coleman, W. Cuthbertson and Rev. R. B. 'Waugh.

Grants were approved as under by the department: — Westshore, shelter shed; Mangateretere, fuel shed; Koro Koro, teacher’s residence; Te Karaka, additional shelter shed; Nuhaka, additional shelter shed; Waipiro Bay, fuel shed.

The department advised that it regretted that it was not yet possible to make available any subsidies, other than those already given for the installation of radio in schools.

The department advised that the grading of schools for 1937 would be on the basis of 95 per cent, of the average roll number for the period beginning on September 7 and ending on October 2, 1936. In connection with the Colenso Trust, the Napier Borough Council advised that its solicitors were of the opinion that the Court would not order a change and that expense might be entailed to no purpose. If there was difficu ilty in administering the funds, it might be as well to consider the advisability of devising a scheme that would result in the best scholars securing prizes.

In regard to proposed rebuilding, the CHve School committee wrote drawing attention to the fact that the school was in its 57th year ol occupation and that the district was entitled to a new building and residence. The committee urged that the board place the matter before the Minister of Education as soon as possible.—The board’s architect is to inspect the building and report to the board.
