Grant of £75 for Shelter Sheds

MEETING OF THE BOARD The monthly meeting of the Hastings High School Board of Governors was held last evening, Mr. E. V. Simpson presiding over Mrs. T. A. Hill, and Messrs. J. Wright, A. D. Ross, H. de Deune, F. J. Hull, W. A. G. Penlington (principal), and E. A. Murley (secretary). The department advised approval of a grant of £75 for the extension of the shelter sheds for the boys, and also a grant of £6 15/- for the purpose of making alterations to the school conveniences. Advice was also received from the department to the effect that the manual science capitation grant, which was reduced by 50 per cent, in 1931, had been restored to the full amount in compliance with the secondary schools’ regulations. The Audit Department approved of the expenditure from the School’s Activity Fund of the amount necessary to instal a radio set in the Assembly Hall for the teaching of musical appreciation and for other purposes. The Hastings Cricket Association was granted the use of the school playing area for the coming season on the same terms as last year.

The Principal reported that Miss A. Black had commenced duty as home science mistress, Miss H. G. Millar as part-time art mistress, and Miss J. Stevenson as science mistress.

A lengthy circular was received from the Auckland Grammar School regarding tho unification of control of high schools, and it was decided to support the suggestion that the Minister of Education be requested to call a conference at an early date in Wellington for the purpose of discussing this mutter with representatives of the various high school boards. Reports were received from tho Superintendent of the Hastings Fire Brigade (Mr. R. Henderson) aud the Borough Building Inspector (Mr. C. Carrell) regarding re prevention in tho Assembly Hall, and the reports were adopted and letters of thanks are to be sent to the officers concerned for their helpful assistance aud advice. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The monthly report of the Principal (Mr. W. A. G. Penlington) read as follows:— Attendance: The roll-number during the month of August averaged 441.1 and the daily attendance 406.3, or 92.1 per cent, of the roll number. At the end of the term 440 pupils were on the roll. (215 girls and 225 boys).

Free Places: Several alterations to the free place regulations have recently been gazetted. A junior free place will be tenable for three years in the case of a holder who was under 13 years of age ou December 31 of the year in which he qualified for a junior free place. In the past it lias been necessary to make special application for extension for a third year. A senior free placo will in future be tenable until the end of the year in which the holder’s nineteenth birthday occurs; and it may be extended further if the Minister is satisfied that special circumstances exist.

Akina Club: The members of the, girls’ Akina Club organised an historical pageant and performed it several times in the school hall, so that it, could be seen by all the pupils. Members of the High School League, who had taken charge of the refreshments at the school social and other functions, were entertained by the club as a mark of the school’s appreciation. .
