BURGLARY CHARGES

Young Man Pleads Guilty in Napier ATTEMPTED SUICIDE After pleading guilty to several charges of burglary, one of being in the possession of house-breaking implements and one of unlawful carnal knowledge, Eric Alfred Chapman, ot Napier, aged 24 years, was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at Wellington by Mr J. Miller, S.M.. in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning. On a charge of attempted suicide he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence il called upon, while on a further charge of burglary h ewas remanded to appear at Palmerston North on Monday. The hearing of the charges was conducted by Detective-Sergeant Nuttall and occupied the whole morning. Seventeen witnesses were called by the police. The following charges were preferred against Chapman Attempted suicide on September 8; breaking and entering the Port Ahuriri Post Office, with intent to commit a crime, on July 19; wilfully damaging a safe, the property of the N.Z. Government, to the value of £ll 2//11, July 19, and thereby commiting mischief; breaking and entering McClurg’s, with intent to commit a crime, July 20; breaking and entering McGruer’s (Napier), Ltd., and stealing the sum of £7 15/-, July 21; breaking and entering Harston’s Ltd., and stealing a piano aecordeon valued at £lO, August 5; breaking and entering W. M. Angus, Ltd., with intent to commit a crime, August 10; breaking and entering the premises of A. B. Hurst and stealing the sum of £2 3/9, August 10; breaking and entering C. H. Cranby and Co’s premises and stealing £4 17/9, August 19; breaking and entering the De Luxe Theatre, Dannevirke, and stealing £l4, August 25; on the same day at Awatoto of having in his possession by day without lawful excuse house-break-ing instruments to wit, skeleton keys, gelignite, detonators, and electric wire with intent to commit a crime; and at Awatoto unlawfully carnally knowing a certain female over the age of 12 and under the age of 16. On the suggestions of the Magistrate the first two charges were amended to read: —Breaking and entering the Port Ahuriri Post Office and committing the crime of mischief.
