CLOSE SETTLEMENT

New Subdivision to Provide 20 Housing Sites AVENUE SCHEME Various applications for approval of sub-divisional plans relating to a nxr.iber of properties in the borough prompted the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last night, to draw special attention to these applications, which he said demonstrated the activity that was taking place in the settlement of the borough. Commenting on the application made for the subdivision of an extensive area, the property of N. R. and L. C. Gallien. of Townshend street, the plans of which provided for the laying-down of a roadway similar in type to Heathcote Avenue. Mr Maddison said that this subdivision meant bringing info use another 20 sections for residential purposes.

As the roadway would be in the nature of an avenue, he suggested that possibly the owners would consider the idea of widening the footpaths from 12 feet to 15 feet so that any tree planted could be placed in the pathway instead of in the road. “This would be in accordance with the modern conception of town-planning,” said -Mr Maddison. “The road would never be an arterial road and consequently there would not be any heavy traffic on it.

“Air Mawson recommended this type of avenue,” commented Cr. P. E. Loach.

It was decided to make the suggestion to the owners concerned, and the question of naming the street was left for consideration by the works committee in conjunction with the property owners. Later in the evening five other subdivisional plans were placed before the meeting, and the Mayor remarked that these involved 17 residences, nine of which would be erected immediately.
