POPULAR PRESIDENT

Tribute to Mr. J. H. Maeniven COMMITTEE’S DEMONSTRATION A spontaneous and most cordial demonstration of affection for the reUr ing president of the Hawke's Bay A and P. Society, Mr J. H. Maeniven, was made by those present at the commit tee’s last meeting this morning. Mr Maeniven had eat down after making some remarks in appreciation of the way in which the committee had supported him during his five years as president, when instantly every memben in the room sprang to his feet ami joined in the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The song was sung with tremendous volume and sincerity, and the eheers that followed were quite in kcepin.,. It was a fine tribute to a man for whom all who knew him feel a great affection and regard, and the Press representatives present, though they properly did not join in the chorus, would have liked to do so, for Mr Maeniven has been a fine friend to’ them. Mr Maeniven thanked the committoe for their loyalty to him, and said that they had all been a happy family. They had pulled together, aud had got on with their work. He hoped that Mr J. H. Absolum, the incoming president, would receive the same degree of support.

“I wish the society every success,” Mr Maeniven concluded, “and so long as I live I shall take an active interesi in it.”
