WORKING WOMEN

The Peace Plane Appeal Mrs. Bellerby presided at the meeting of the Hastings branch of the Working Women's Alovernment. Tho monthly financial statement was adopted. The chief topic discussed was tho peace-plane collection, which the movement hopes to hold on Saturday. Various members spoke of the widwespread interest the peace plane appeal is creating, and it is expected that much practical sympathy and help will be forthcoming from the public of this district. Mrs. Sarah E. Jones, 211 E. Queen street, nevt door to the ’’Tribune” Office, has very kindly lent her home to tbe Peace Plane Appeal Committee, and as it is central it will be a depot where collection boxes may be picked up and returned. Intending lielpeis may leave their names with Mrs. Jones. The secretary was instructed to write to the principal of the High School asking if any of the pupils would care to help in this very woithy cause. The members were very pleased to note the clause inserted in tne proposed Protection of Birds Act which will provide a penalty tor persons taking wild birds, whether indigenous to New Zealand or not. by the use of birdlime. It will also be an offence to sell or possess any such wild bird other than cage ringed specimens bred in captivity. The shooting of captive biids under artificial conditions is also dealt with in the clause, which says that every person who promotes, arranges. conducts, assists in or receives money tor. or takes parts in a meeting in the course of which captibe bitds are liberated bv hand or by trap for the purpose ol being shot at the time of their liberation, any owner or occupier of premises who permits the property or miv part to be used lor (hose purposes shall be liable upon summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £25 or. alternatively or in addition thereto, to be imprisoned with or without hard labour for a term not exceeding three months. The movement lias always supported the protection of birds and trees, and is pleased to hear that definite steps are to be taken lor their protection.
