SWINDLES IN FRANCE
British Subject Arrested LONDON, May 1. The “Daily Mail’s” Paris correspondent says that William Warren, who was wanted for alleged swindles at Paris, Lille and the Riviera, was arrested aboard the Ordntes to-day. According to the French judicial authorities, Warren is also known as Richardson and Bludgersill. He was sentenced at Peronne to five years’ for the theft of £650 from a French farmer in October of last year. Evidence was given that he induced a farmer to show him money in a Pe ronne cafe, for which Warren substitut ed ordinary paper. The farmer did not discover his loss till he went to the bank to deposit the money. A cabled message on April 5 stated that when the Orontes called at Villetranche, the authorities asked the captain to hand Warren over to them for alleged swindles. The captain refused on the grounds of extraterritoriality, but agreed to hand Warren over if instructed by the British Consul. The vessel left before the Consul’s reply was received.
