THE PUBLIC SERVICE
Superannuation After 40 Years MR. SAVAGE’S POLICY By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, May 1. A definite general policy of retiring civil servants on superannuation after 40 years’ service was announced to-day by the Prime Minister, the Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage, in an interview. “That is the viewpoint of the Government in general terms,” Mr Savage said, “but it must not be taken as absolute. We do not want to be bound by hard and fast rules. If special cases arise and there are special reasons why we should employ aman beyond the 40-year period, his engagement will be continued.” The Primo Minister added that the whole question was bound up with the consideration of working conditions generally. If it was considered advisable to reduce the working day, it would bo a natural sequel for a .reduction to be made in the working life.
