LATE MR. C. W. DAVIS

Funeral at Taradale The funeral of Mr C. W. Davis took place yesterday afternoon and was very largely attended, friends coming from all parts of the province to pay their last tribute to a very old and esteemed settler. A service was conducted at All Saint’s Church, Taradale, by Canon A. Hodge, assisted by the Rev. S. R. Gardiner, M.A. The Rev. Canon Hodge, also conducted the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers were the deceased’s three sons Messrs W. 8., A. 8., and C. B. Davis, a nephew, Mr I l ’. Bousfteld, who represented the Gisborne Sheep Dog Trial Club, Mr D. Rigger (Central H.B. Sheep Dog Trial Club), and H. E. Edgley, representing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Tha service was a most impressive one. A very large number of beautiful wreaths, messages and telegrams of sympathy were received.

In the course of the funeral service the Rev. Canon Hodge mentioned that the late Mr Davis had been one of the foundation members of All Saint’s Church; that he had been one of seventeen foundation members present at the jubilee of the church, eleven years ago, and that he had also been present at the diamond jubilee of the church over a year ago. On the occasion of the church jubilee the seventeen of the original foundation members who were present had decided to memorialise the occasion by making a present to tha church, Mr Davis having been one of those displaying a very keen interest in the proposal. The result of the roundtable talk on that occasion had been the present of a very handsome cross which was now on the altar of the church. This cross had been obtained from Australia and was a very fine one.

The names of the seventeen foundation members wore engraved on the cross, so that, no matter how large a place Taradale might become, no matter if All Saints’ Church became a Cathedral, the names of those seventeen foundation members would be perpetuated for all time.
