JEWEL ROBBERS
Attempt to Smash Shop Window THIEVES DISTURBED By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 21. A daring attempt to smash the window of a jeweller’s shop in Cashel street at 8 o’clock this evening was abandoned when the thieves were surprised by a motor car stopping near the shop. The men, who were not seen, escaped. The owner of the shop, Mr Francis Curtis, w’ho arrived soon after 8, found that a big iron grille covering part of the shop front had been torn off. Tho lock was broken, and part of the window covered with treacle so that it would break without making a noise. The shop was raided successfully in September last, when thieves escaped with £l5OO worth of goods. The attempt made to-night was very daring, as tho shop was W'ell lighted and every action ot the thieves could have been seen by passers-by. Cashel street at this point is by no means deserted at 8 o 'clock.
There were many valuable diamonds in the window, and Mr Curtis estimated that in diamonds alone the window could have yielded £250 for the thieves
