MENACE TO AVIATORS

Removing Wires Near Napier Aerodrome APPORTIONMENT OF COST The proposal of the Napier Airport Board to remove overhead wires on the Westshore Embankment, in the vicinity of the aerodrome, came before the notice of the Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board at its meeting yesterday, when members approved of the action of the secretary-manager in advising the Airport Board that the Power Board accepted no liability towards the cost of removing the wires. The chairman, Mr T. E, Crosse, presided over Messrs W. Harvey, C. D. Cox, B. Harding, L. J. Harvey, S. Ashcroft, M. 8. Chambers and C. C. Smith. The Airport Board wrote to the Power Board on March 11 to the effect that an apportionment of costs in connection with the removal of power wires had been made, and the board would be glad to know what proportion the Tower Board proposed to bear. To that letter the secretary-manager of the Power Board, Mr H. H. Wylie, made thl following reply: “I have to acknowledge receipt of yours of the 11th instant, and wish to advise that I have not heard of any apportionment of costs in connection with the removal of power wires. My board has not considered the matter of contributing towards the cost, and in fact has not been asked to do so.”

On April 2, the Airport Board again wrote in connection with the removal of wires. The secretary advised that his board intended to remove portion of the power and telephone lines on the Westshore Embankment, and that at a later date the Power Board would be notified of the portion of line it was proposed to have removed. At the same time, the Power Board would receive advice of the proportion of expense it would be expected to contribute. In a reply to that letter, the Power Boards secretary-manager said that the matter would be considered at the next board meeting, ,u‘ at the same time the board had no liability in connection with putting these lines underground. When the matte: was receiving consideration at yesterday’s meeting of the Power Board, Mr C. C. Smith said he thought that the benefit of removing the wires would be reaped by the Airport Board, for which reason it should bear the cost.

The Airport Board’s letters were received, and the secretary-manager’s action in regard to them was approved.
