WORK ON TRACKS A.R.C. Candidates Put Through Their Paces ELLERSLIE GALLOPS (By Telegraph— Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 9. After light showers overnight the weather was perfect for the final gallops at Ellerslie this morning. The course proper 35 feet out from the rails provided excellent going. The No. 3 grass and tan tracks were also open, and several horses were schooled over hurdles in the centre and the steeplechase course. Some good gallops were registered, the best over six furlongs being that of Rereatu, while Nun Nicer, Mungatoon, Lagoon, Epris, Royal Appellant and Gay Broney also shaped well. Among the two-year-olds Notium, Birthday Party and Karl did best. On the course proper Kelly beat Vai. spear over seven furlongs in 1.31 after running the first half-mile in 51. Solas did six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. Randlubber went five furlongs in 1.1 3-5. This hack has come on very fast. Lady Graceful ran seven furlongs, the last six in 1.18 4-5, in good style. Happy Landing and Maine went round in 2.11, the last seven furlongs in 1.38 3-5. Mungatoon and Nun Nicer went seven furlongs, the first half in 50 3-5 and the lull distance in 1.30. They finished on terms. Rereatu did six furlongs in 1.14 3-5. He carried a light weight. Nevertheless, it was an attractive effort. Knight of Australia and Shy finished in front of Wee Pat, Alainland and Persian Lady at the end of seven furlongs run in 1.31, the first half-mile in 51 3-5. Tho first-named pair went well. Royal Appellant and Gay Broney were on terms over seven furlongs iu 1.30, the first half-mile in 50 3-5. Roman Mascot, who went with them, was several lengths away. The southern two-year-old Wagner was much too good for Raepata over five furlongs run in 1.4 4-5. Lagoon shaded Epris with Kilberis close up over six furlongs in 1-16 4-5. Both are maidens showing fair promise.

After breakfast Entail, who started well back from the seven-furlong post, came home in 1.34 4-5. He went nicely. Karl did live furlongs in 1.3 3-5, hitting out freely, liaut Monde went seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5, the last six in 1.18. Birthday Party and Bonny Guy rau the first two furlongs in 24 4-5 and five in 1.4. Greek Shepherd and Spiral were responsible for a sound gallop over seven furlongs in 1.30 4-5, the first half mile in 52 3-5. The Champagne Stakes candidates, Black Friar and Golden Blonde did five furlongs in 1.3, the first two in 24 2-5. Tho rastest five furlongs of the morning was credited to Notium, who beat Moquetto comfortably iu 1.2 2-5, the first two in 24 2-5. Notium was running on strongly. It was a brilliant effort. Victor Colima finished a useful tusk by running seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5. Thespis strode over a mile and a-qtiar-ter, taking 2.14 1-5 for the final round and 1.24 for the last six furlongs. Verti Acre and To Hai were in front of United over seven furlongs run in 1.31 2-5. Vera Acre and Te Hai are both in capital order. Morning Sun did six. furlongs iu 1.20 4-5, a useful effort for a novice. Refresher and Tahurangi were companions over seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. Ruling King did a round in 2.J 3, the last seven furlongs iu 1.3 S 4-5. Valmint and Fleetwind went out ou the tan track and finished on terms, the last five furlongs in 1.10 1-5. Free Advice also worked usefully on the same track. One of the best schooling efforts seen at Ellerslie for a long time was that of Scotch Nation and King Mestor, who finished well clear of Widdcn after negotiating four hurdles in tho centre. Timed from hurdle to hurdle they recorded 59 3-5, which has seldom been baaten. The first-named pair jumped with plenty of dash and Scotch Nation, wide out all the way, impressed most.

Boxy, Adsum, Diamond, Forest Glow and Puccini were associated over a round of the steeplechase course. After jumping the second fence of the double Puccini was pulled up owing to hitting a fence. Roxy, Adsum and Diamond led over the hill and all jumped well till they reached the course proper, where the trio finished down the straight. Forest Glow cleared the sod wall ag / i and finished up over the water janqJ? They all fenced safely.

Puccini when pulled up was carrying one of his hind legs temporarily and appeared in a bad way, but improved on leaving the course, although displaying distinct signs of soreness. Friesland was scratched at 11.45 a.m. for the Easter Handicap. Txouvaile and Cuppy have nlso been withdrawn from the first day’s engagements.
