WAIPUKURAU CHESS

Club’s Annual Meeting From Our Own Correspondent WAIPUKURAU, April 8. The annual meeting of the Waipukurau Chess Club was held to-night, Air G. E. Fowler presiding over a fair attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Afessrs A. Jacobsen, W R. White and H. Liddle. The balance-sheet showed a debit balance of 17/-. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Air G. E. Fowler; captain, Air D. W. Nield; committee, Alessrs H. Wiggins, Staple ton, and J. H. Walker. The appointment of a secretary was left in the hands of the committee. The subscription was fixed at 6/-. The night decided upon for club fixtures was Friday, while the opening night is to be April 24. It was decided to play handicap matches in sections and the championship games in the same manner as last year. The members agreed that as the last match had been a success, another tele graph match should be played with Woodville this year. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Air Fowler for his work as president during the past year. The annual report read as follows:— “We were again unfortunate in the matter of members leaving the district. Early in the season Air L. C. Kiley, our energet* secretary and most promising player, was transferred to Dargaville. We bade him farewell with regret, realising that the club owed a great deal of its success in the past to his work on its behalf. “Opening the season with a credit balance of £l, we closed with a debit of 17/-, thus showing a loss of £1 17/ou the years working. This is entirely due to au unexpected increase in our rent during the course of the season, and to enable us to carry on, it will be necessary to find new quarters at a rent within our capacity to pay.

“There were 11 entries for the championship tourney, which excited great interest throughout the season, and was eventually won by Air W. R. White. He is to be congratulated on the rapid progress he has made in the game. “To reduce the pressure of tournament games, entries for the handicap tourney were restricted to those who did not enter for the championship. The result was that there were onlyfive players and the handicap tourney did not provide the interest it did in the previous years. Two complete rounds were played, and the eventual winner was Mr D. Al. Robertson —tn whom our congratulations. “During the season the club played home and home matches with the Hastings club and put up a respectable showing. An innovation so far as we are concerned was the telegraphic, match against the Woodville club, which provided a most interesting ovperience and resulted ir. a narrow win for our opponents. Pukeora Sanatorium was also visited, while enjoyable games were played with Ruahine (Alakaretu). “Arrangements for matches against our friends of the Napier club did not eventuate, an omission which we must rectify this coming year. The thanks of the club are due to Mr J. Huntley Walker for the gift of a set of chessmen as a prize for the runner-up in the championship tourney. “The splendid work of our secretary, Air D. W. Nield, cannot be allowed to pass without remark. Throughout the season Air Nield was a tower of strength and to his tact and energy is due in a great degree the success of the elub in the past season. “In conclusion, I wish to express my appreciation of the work of the committee during the season and of their co-operation, as well as of members generally, in all the activities of the club. ”
