AUTOMOBILE MATTERS

Association Meets TEMPORARY PATROL OFFICER A temporary patrol officer was engaged at last night’s meeting in Napier of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association. The chairman, Air J. H. Edmundson, presided over Afessrs J. E. Peach, C. B. Hansen, F. Dysart, G. E. Tyler, P. Ronberg, Benjamin, R. P. Kay, A. E. Renou, W. Al. Angus, Clark, Captain Forde, and Dr. A. Fitzgerald. Apologies for absence were received from Afessrs. R. Kennedy, A. Avery, G Tripe, and W. Forsyth. Air H. B. McLeod was interviewed by the meeting with a view to his temporary appointment as a service officer in Hastings and surrorunding district. It was decided to appoint him. The idea of having New Zealand made a party to the International Driving Convention was stated to be impractical because the New Zealand system of signalling did not accord with the regulations of that body. The New Zealand system is more in accord with the American system of highway signs. The matter was left in abeyance. The association is to follow up the question of having a magnetic truck for the clearing of road surfaces. Suck trucks cost £lOOO a year to maintain, and the North Island Afotor Union did not consider that the amount of dust roads warranted the extra expense. The meeting resolved to follow up the question in regard to shingle roads.
