HAVELOCK N. AFFAIRS

Meeting of Town Board HELP FOR STORM SUFFERERS The monthly meeting of the Havelock North Town Board was held last evening, Mr H. B. von Dadelszen presided over Messrs A. B, Greenwood, A. Christie, A. I’oop, E. C. Stratton, W, Paton, J. J. Nimon, and W. H. Anderson (clerk). The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, wrote in connection with the Fire Prevention Week campaign, and advised that the week would be held between March 30 and April 4, and he asked the co-operation of the board in the campaign. — The matter was referred to Mr A. Toop and the clerk. The Public Works Department advised that it had received a number of applications for financial assistance as the result of the cyclonic storm. Some of the applications were not supported with sufficient evidence that assistance was warranted. It was suggested that applications be invited, and that they be sent to the clerk, who should investigate every case and then report to the officer for the district. The information to be supplied related to the extent of the damage, the estimated cost of restoration, whether the applicant was in a position to carry out the repairs without financial assistance, and whether in the event of a loan security should bo offered. A special application form was available for all applications. The clerk was of the opinion that all sufferers should be circulated, otherwise he thought that some injustice might be done to those who were not acquainted of the opportunity offered. It was decided to receive the letter, and in the event of any applications from within the board’s district the clerk and chairman attend to them. Financial assistance was sought by the Hawke’s Bay Development Council in its project in the carrying out of the land utilisation survey. Members expressed sympathy with the proposal, but it was decided to advise the council that as the board had only £l5 available for unauthorised expenditure, the board was unable to assist the project financially. BEPOBTS ON MONTH’S WOBK. The cemetery committee (Messrs. A. B. Greenwood and A. Christie) reported that the storm damage had now been repaired and that the cemetery in general was looking well. The Bishop Memorial gates have been repainted and the committee now recommended that the approach to the gates be tarscaled. The work would cost approvi mately £lO and would greatly improve the appearance of the property. The committee was arranging to replace some of the shrubs which were lost in the storm, but as the funds of the committee were at present low, it would appreciate gifts from the public of suitable shrubs for autumn planting. The clerk (Mr. W. H. Anderson) reported that the continued broken weather had necessitated greater use of the grader, and all roads were now badly in need of metal and it would be necessary to pick down various corners. The work of widening Campbell and Duart roads would be started this month. In the electricity department the staff had been engaged the whole period on restoration of storm damage; the rubble which blocked the intake at the Maraetotara dam was all cleared without having to resort to a shut down. The main transmission line had been strengthened and where necessary poles had been replaced. Water pumped totalled 2,727,000 gallons and 2,697,000 gallons were consumed leaving a surplus of 30,000 gallons. The Domain improvement job was progressing steadily despite the unfavourable weather. The trees which came down in the storm had been removed. The load limit over the woodcu | bridge on the To Aute road had been reduced to three ions. The need of a I tool shed on the Domain was still an urgent one. Up to February 15 last 96 per cent, of the 1935-36 rates were collected. Donations to the Fire Brigade fund were coming in steadily and the response to date was quite satisfactory. No cases of infectious diseases were reported. Accounts amounting to £5875 7/4 were passed for payment.
