STATE THEATRE
VISIT BY GLADYS MONCRIEFF To-night and to-morrow night the State Theatre, Hastings, has a special attraction, in that Miss Gladys Moncrieff will appear then. Miss Moncrieff was the greatest musical comedy star of only a few years ago, and the fact that her popularity is undimmed was proved when, only a few weeks ago, she toured the country. With Miss Moncrieff are Gil Dech, a brilliant pianist, and John Robertson, New Zealand's premier cornetist. The chief item on the picture programme is “The Return of Sherlock Holmes”, starring Arthur Wontner, with the support of Lyn Harding and Jane Carr. The plot is based on Conan Doyle’s story “The Valley of Fear”. The film opens with Holmes just about to retire from his practice as private investigator, his one regret being that he has been unable to bring to justice the arch-criminal Moriarty. Moriarty visits Holmes and urges him to make his retirement permanent, a nd not to emerge to interfere with his schemes. Later, a murder mystery at an eerie old castle brings the official detective, Lestrade, to Holmes for assistance. The criminologist cannot resist the temptation to solve the problem, and takes an active part in the elucidation of the mystery, incidentally bringing Moriarty within the clutches of the law.
