ATHLETICS AND CYCLING
Hastings Season Opens VARTAN WINS A DOUBLE Last Night’s Fine Programme Though the track was a little on the heavy side, conditions were ideal for the official opening of the 1935-36 season of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at Nelson Park, Hastings, last evening. This was the club’s fourth effort to commence activities, unfavourable weather having caused three postponements. The attendance was excellent for the first night and the programme was a splendid one, being well varied and catering fur all branches of the sport. Though individual performances were not outstanding, competition was keen and the events were very interesting. Several “doubles” were recorded by competitors during the evening, Miss Urquhart collecting both the women's sprint events, Vartan, the two field events, and Begley a couple of the men’s flat races.
