DANCING EXAMINER
To Arrive Soon in Napier
An interesting visitor to New Zealand, Mr Felix Demery, will arrive in Auckland on the twenty-first of this month. He is the authorised examiner for the Operatic Association of Dancing of Great Britain, and, since he left England in March last, has conducted examinations in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. By his visit, now terminated, Australia has received its greatest fillip in dancing for many years. Entries exceeded greatly the most optimistic expectations of the organisers, Misses Frances Scully, of Sydney, and Jennie Brennan, Melbourne, both well known teachers. As a result of their organisation, oyer 1000 entries came in from various cities in Australia—Miss Brennan alone receiving 210 entries before the closing Mr Demery was entertained by the Misses Jennie and Eileen Brennan to a cocktail party at their cabaret, winch was attended also by the leaders of music and other arts. A special informal dinner was tendered him by the Victorian Society of Dancing, specially to afford the visitor an opportunity of gaining closer contacts with its executive members.
Many similar functions were held in Sydney, Miss Scully arranging them. From near and remote parts of New South Wales and Queensland she had over 500 entries.
It is interesting to know that Mr Felix Demery is to visit Napier, where Miss Constance Macdonald has 14 pupils for examination, four of whom are her Hastings pupils. Miss Betty Davis also presents two. Some idea of the very high standard required may be obtained from the fart that out of the 70 Fremantle (Australia! entries seven only passed, and at Adelaide three passed out of 40.
