“SELECT YOUR COFFIN”
Handling Dangerous Bulls The past year has seen a number of fatalities caused by bulls turning on their owners, goring and trampling the victim to death, and there have also been several less serious attacks by these animals. Writing in a humorous vein, an American correspondent advises farmers who take chances with bulls to “Select Their Coflins Early.” “Where would you like to be buried, or cremated, when that bull of yours decides to take advantage of your carelessness by goring you,” he asKs. “Of course you are going to be killed. All careless dairy farmers handling big bulls are killed sooner or later, and you may get it any day, We refer especially to you dairy farmers who pride yourselves on the fact that you do not need to take any precautions in the handling of your bull because he is as tame as a kitten, and besides, he is afraid of you. Is this anything else but false pride? And be sure to have some life insurance. Of course, you won’t bo here to spend it but there will be a big bill to pay for a coffin, hearse, flowers, grave, etc., and you should provide for this before you commit suicide by inviting your gentle bull to gore you to death and making a foo.l of yourself.” And this humorous view of the position applies with equal force to the New Zealand farmer as it docs to the American.
