BOWLING

. HASTINGS CLUB Annual Meeting To-night REVIEW'.OF PAST SEASON The is a summary of the report to be presented at the annual meeting of thejHastings Bowling Club thia evening:— Tha past seasonihas been thoroughly successful and enjoyable, owing in the main to the improvements that were effected in the leveß of the green and in the condition of tihe grass. For these improvements we are indebted to the very line work gratuitously carried out at the close of the previous season by Mr. J. P. Smith, of Port Ahuriri, and in the second place to the unremitting labour of our green superintendent, Mr F. McLeod, ably assisted by Mr. T. J. Thompson. Not only the playing surface, but the general upkeep of the whole premises have been a credit to the superintendents. The caretaker, Mr. Hill, has carried out his duties in • particularly satisfactory way. The results of the season’s competitions were as follows: —Championship singles, A. W. Parkinson; runner-up, W. Garnett; championship pairs. A. K. Johnston and A. W. Parkinson (s); runners-up, J. E. Hall and W. Duff (s’); handicap pairs, J. Ash and J. E. Hall (s); runners-up, W. A. Frude and D. T. McCormick (s). The championship singles for 1934, which had not been completed, were completed, and resulted in a win for A. K. Johnston, who defeated J. E. Hall in the final. The feathers (for rinks) were won by the following: F. King, W. Wilson, D. Waters, and J. R. Esson (s). The Tonkin Tikis were allocated fori the first time for inter-club competition, and the donor is to be congratulated upon the success that has followed up this departure. These trophies have brought the bowlers of the district more closely into contact with one another. The present holders are J. E. Hal] and J. R- Esson, of our own club.

Mr. Gardner kindly agreed to allow his shield to be played for in a similar way, but owing to the fact that arrangements for the competition were not completed until well on in the season, only two challenges were played, Hastings defeating Kia Toa, but later suffering defeat at the hands of Heretaungn. The Esson Badges, tfcindly presented by the president at the opening of the season for competition between rinks skipped by the treasurer and secretary respectively, are now held by the treasurer's rink, R. Davies, T. llobson, J. B. Pickering and F. J. Tonkin (s). Owing to the fact that the object in donating these trophies has not been achieved, the president proposes to offer them for inter-club competition for rinks on the lines of the Tonkin Tikis.

In the champion of champion events A. K. Johnston represented tho club in the singles, and put up a highly meritorious performance. The same player was associated as lead with A. W. Parkinson in the pairs, and the team achieved the proud distinction for the club of carrying off the championship of this event. J. E. Hall, D. T. McCormick, W. Duff, and A. Parkinson (skip) were the rink selected to represent the club, and they, while failing to annex any honours, performed creditably.

Two noteworthy events of the season were the visits of big teams of bowlers one from Manawatu and the other from South Auckland. On both occasions our club had the honour of entertaining the visitors on behalf of the Centre. In this connection we desire particularly to thank those ladies who assisted in dispensing morning and afternoon teas.

The membership at the close of the season was 55, including one life member and one honorary member.

Acting upon the authority delegated to the committee at the special general meeting called to consider the question of selling the small green, we have offered the property for sale, but so tar a purchaser has not been found. Endeavours are being made to arrange for the installation early next season of a testing machine at Hastings. Each club is to contribute a small portion of the cost, and the balance is to be provided from the funds of the Centre.
