WIMBLEDON TENNIS

NEW ZEALANDERS WIN McGrath Eliminates Allison PERRY IN EXUBERANT MOOD (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 25, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 24. The three New Zealanders, C. E. Malfroy, A. C. Stedman and E. D. Andrews, survived the first round of the men’s singles at the Wimbledon tennis tournament today. Each won comfortably in straight sets. All of the Australian representation except Turnbull scored wins; McGrath eliminated Allison, and Crawford eliminated Brugnon, but Turnbull lost to Van Ryn. The tournament began in a heat-wave tempered by a breeze. The courts were exceptionally well grassed, but had a good pace considering the recent wet weather. Turnbull, on the outer court, opened the Australian programme against Van Ryn, who quickly exposed the inconsistency of Turnbull’s backhand and scored freely with punishing forehand drives. Van Ryn took the first set, 6—2. Turnbull repeatedly over-drove. Stronger serving and improved driving enabled Turnbull to make a better fight in the second set, but fie was unable to counter the American’s fierce serving and all round severity, as a result of which Van Ryn won the set, 6—3. Van Ryn displayed great judgment in lobbing. Van Ryn continued to force Turnbull into errors on his backhand, and easily won the match. Perry was in an exuberant mood, vanquishing Rainville in 40 minutes. The match of the day was between McGrath and Allison. The former played his best tennis of the pour, driving pungently and lobbing with discretion. McGrath kept a beautiful length, and frequently passed Allison when the American came to the net. McGrath received an ovation for eliminating the fifth seeded player—a surprising but well-deserved achievement.

The fourth set was extraordinary. Allison led s—o and held set-point, which he lost with a double fault. McGrath, who apparently was content to drop tho set, then changed his mind, went all out and, by vigorous driving and volleying, won seven games in a row. Crawford, in confidently defeating Brugnon, showed signs of returning to form. Quist with equal ease defeated Partridge.

Apart from McGrath’s triumph, the only other noteworthy events were Boussus’ narrow escape and Borotra’s cunning resistance to age, heat and fatigue, and his wearing-out of Henkel. Wood showed he is a serious contender for Crawford’s place as a semifinalist by brilliantly defeating the tenth seeded player, Itoh, in straight sets. Detailed results were:— MEN’S SINGLES.
