STORMY VOYAGE
Fishing Launch’s Trip By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, June 24. After a stormy voyage to Norfolk Island from Auckland the 55ft. fishing launch Melodian returned to port today. Leaving Auckland on June 11 the Melodian called at Whangarei and sailed from there for Norfolk Island. On Juno 14, when about 200 miles from the island, she ran into the tail-end of a cyclone that had damaged other vessels in the Tasman Sea. During the next few days the Melodian was twice hove-to, once for eight hours, and the second for 12 hours. Heavy seas came aboard, one breaking over the top of the funnel and pouring into the engineroom. For three days the crew had nothing to eat but biscuits, although they were twice able to boil the kettle and make a cup of tea. “Under the conditions the little vessel behaved admirably,’’ said Captain Anderson at Norfolk Island, where they arrived on June 18. The crew found that the gale had uprooted many of the famous pine trees of the island. The Melodian left Norfolk Island on June 21.
