ROYAL SCOTCH TARTANS

In Home Decoration

“It it’s plaid, it’s smart,” has been a dress slogan here for several springs,” writes a New York correspondent. Now it has spread to home decoration. The whim of the moment is to have floor coverings of rugs in authentic Royal Scotch tartans. Usually the rugs are very large and leave .only a narrow surround of polished boards.

For those who find tartans too overpowering there are rugs in pastel check designs. The checks arc big, measuring sometimes as much as two feet square and give rather the effect of tiling. They are particularly attractive in lounges which feature white or cream walls and very simple furniture. Even bedspreads are tartan and so are curtains. Quilted tartan bedspreads are picturesque and cosy. One exhibition bedroom scheme featured quilted taffetas bedspreads in red and white tartan. The curtains were also in tartan with deep quilted borders. They were hung from a pleated heading and tied back with enormous white taffetas bows. The furniture was treated with a white, high gloss washable paint. Cushion covers have not escaped the tartan vogue. They look gay in ginghams and rough homespun cottons which need no ironing. The covers are simple and usually have a pleated frill or pipings in shiny American cloth.
