GRAFT & INEFFICIENCY
Shipping Industry in U.S.
FORMER OFFICIAL’S CHARGE
<By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, June 17.
“Despite an extensive congressional investigation into Government regulations relating to tho shipping industry, favouritism, graft and inefficiency abound within this and other branches of the Department of Commerce.” This sensational charge was made to President Roosevelt to-day by Mr Ewing Mitchell, who on Saturday was removed from the position of assistant-Secretary of Commerce in charge of tho air and water transport sections.
Ho claimed that the inspection services were weak because of political favouritism, which was probably responsible for the heavy loss of life in tho Morro Castle and Mohawk steamer disasters, and in tho recent aeroplane crash in which Senator Cutting and several others were killed. He said that loose Government financial aid practices to private steamship lines continued. United States lines were allowed to take the Leviathan out of service after several million dollars in subsidies had been paid with a contractual promise to keep it in service.
Administration officials make no comment on Mr - Mitchell’s charges, except that they have been referred to tho Department of Justice for investigation.
