Mr R. B. Hammond, Dominion Town Planner, arrived in Hastings to-day to confer with the Hastings Borough Council on the Civic Square scheme.
Messrs V. Bradley, G. Speedy, F. A. G. Dunn, and B. Peacock, of Waipukurau, are visiting Rotorua, where they are having a weeks’ golfing and sightseeing.
Mr C. Lassen, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board, left Hastings by car yesterday and today will interview tho Minister of Employment in Wellington in connection with the proposed Ngaruroro river diversion scheme.
Mr C. M. Bennett, a son of the Bishop of Aotcqroa (the lit. Rev. F. A. Bennett), and Mr <’. F. H»r|, have been selected to represent Canterbury College in the inter University oratory contest at Dunedin next month for the Bledisloe Medal.
Mr K. G. Tahiwi was adjudged the winner of the 29th annual Plunket Medal oratory contest for students of Victoria University College. This is the first time that a representative of the Maori race has been successful in this contest.
Mr E. Phillips Turner, F.R.G.S., formerly director of the New Zealand State Forest Service, has been elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. His proposers were Sir Arthur Hill, F.R.H., Professor Troup, F.R.8., Professor Seward, F.R.S., and Dr. Burtt Davy.
The Rev. Dr. Toyohiko Kagawa, Japanese Christian leader and social reformer, returned to Wellington yesterday following his visit to the South Island. Since his arrivaljn the Dominion on May 22 he has delivered 73 public addresses to over 50,000 people, given five broadcast talks and some dozens of newspaper interview*
The Rev. Father J. Spillane, S.M., of St. Mary’s Church, Manchester Street, Christchurch, Ims been transferred to Wellington to take charge of the church of St. Mary of the Angela, Boulcott Street, to roplace Father J. O’Connor, S.M., w.ho will attend the General Chapter of the Marist Order at Rome. The Rev. Father A. Joffcogte, of Sydney, will replace Father Spillane at St. Mary’s.
Sir James Parr will sever his connection with the Auckland University College Council as from the end of this month. He is one ot’ tho nominees of tho Governor-General in Council, and has already been granted six months’ leave of absence on account of his duties as High Commissioner in London. The council received word from him that he did not intend to apply tor additional leave.
