METHODIST MEN
Fellowship’s Opening Banquet The opening function of the Hastings branch of the Methodist Men’s Fellowship took the form'of a banquet in Wesley Hall. There was an attendance of eighty men, including several visitors from Napier. Shortly after 6 o’clock those present sat down to a sumptuous repast, being waited upon by some of the ladies of the church. At the close of the meal and before the commencement q£ the evening’s programme a competition was held for the most amusing anecdote, the prize being awarded to Mr J. Webster. The president of the Fellowship, Mr H. It. French, then proceeded with the programme, which aroused great interest and consisted of visits to the Fellowship of outstanding Dominion “politicians”—the “acting-Prime Minister,” the “Minister of Lands,” and the “Minister of Employment,” the parts being taken by Messrs J. H. Oldham, C. H. Bisson and J. Mowbray Bruce respectively. The first toast was the loyal one, proposed by the president, after which came a special toast proposed by the Bev. K. B. Gosnell to the men who had given their services in the erection of tho additional classrooms at the Sunday school. Mr W. Sands responded. Then came the toasts and addresses of welcome to the visiting ministers of the Crown, Uwe being in the hands of Messrs W. E. Bate, J. Melling and H. R. French. In the midst of humour, conscious and unconscious, some plain truths were stated by the speakers, equally energetic responses coming from the visiting “politicians.” During the evening am] interspersing the addresses, items were rendered by Messrs File. Warren, Linyard and Kean. Community singing wag Iwd by Mr Ten Hcighway.
