TRAWLER DISABLED
Towed Into Port Ahuriri
Fears were entertained last evening for the safety of the trawler Phantom, which left Napier early yesterday morning for a day’s fishing in the bay but had not returned when due at about 3 p.m. The Ethica was sent in search of the Phantom at 8.30 o’clock, and it was reported at 10 p.m. that she had sighted the Phantom off Whakari and wae towing her to port. The vessels arrived at the Iron Pot at one o’clock this morning, the crew of the Phantom being none the worse for tho experience. The Phantom, which is a steam trawler of 19 tons, is owned by Mr V. Picone, fishmonger, of Hustings, and carries a crew of four. The master is Mr James Wabburton and also on the ship yesterday were Mr J. Picone, son of the owner, and two others. Mr. V. Picone was aboard the Ethica when she went in search of the Phantom.
On arrival the master of the Phantom said that at about 6 o’clock yesterday morning, when off Whakari, the vessel developed tail-shaft trouble. They dropped anchor, put out lines and hoisted two distress flags, fore and aft. When no assistance had been received at dark they hoisted lights. Then at 10 p.m. the Ethica arrived and towed the disabled vessel to port. The exact nature and extent of the trouble cannot be ascertained until the trawler goes on the slip.
