CLOCK TOWER SITE
Trouble Encountered DISCOVERY OF OLD WELLS During excavations In preparation for the building of the Hastings clock tower the contractor for the work, Mr A. Hampton, discovered an old well ca the site, and a similar discovery was made when the work of excavating a little nearer to Heretaunga street was begun. Mr Hampton then ceased operations and reported to the council, w r ho met on the site and discussed the position with Mr Hampton and the Borough Engineer, Mr C. E. Evans. As a result of the discussion it was decided to move back to a site 38 feet from Heretaunga street, and to build the tower parallel to the Railway road frontage. Mentioning the matter at last evening’s meeting of the council the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, remarked that some use of the wells could be made. They might provide a water supply for the gardens adjoining the site of the tower, or be used to provide a permanent stream of running water along the main street gutters. To use the water in that latter way, he said, would be of value from the point of view of the public health, and would assist in keeping the streets clean.
