Scarcity of Potatoes. Potatoes are in scare supply in Wanganui at present, practically all the local-grown, tubers having been marketed. Hastings growers have been drawn on liberally this season for Wanganui requirements, and soon plentiful supplies will come to hand as a result of the main digging in the South Island.
Her Majesty's Birthday. Her Majesty the Queen will be 68 years old to-morrow. Eight days later, on June 3, the King will be 70, It is therefore interesting that the birthdays of both Theif Majesties will be celebrated during the Jubilee festivities in England which mark the completion of 25 years as sovereigns of the British Empire. Medical Science Scholarship
To establish a scholarship in medical science at the University of Otago, to be known as Dr. A. F. J. Mickle Memorial Scholarship, the widow of Dr Mickle has given the university the sum of £5OO. "That Is Giving." ‘‘Dr. Kagawa., the Japanese Christian teacher who is shortly to visit Napier, makes £2OOO a year from his books, and gives the whole of it to the support of his tuberculosis clinic,” said Mi Harold Large, of Napier, at an address to the Hastings Red Cross Society last evening. Dr. Kagawa and his family of three children Jive on £l2 a year. "That,” said Air Large, ‘‘is what I call giving.”

In Russia there are 6,000,003 voluntary members of the Red Cross paying a subscription of 10 kopeks a week; in New Zealand there are 3000 members, in Japan, every school child is a mem her of the movement. Declaration of War.
"The accident occurred on June 30,” said defending counsel in a motor collision case in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, ‘‘and yet the first shot in this action was not fired until the writ was issued on January 20.” "Not the first shot,” coriected counsel for plaintiff. “My friend is right.” admitted fhe speaker, “the first shot was a letter from plaintiff’s solicitors to defendant on September 13.” “That was not the first shot,” suggested Mr. Justice Callan, “it was a dedal ation of war.”
Cancelling Jubilee Stamps. One appaicnt drawback to the issue of stamps commemorating the King's Silver Jubilee is the difficulty of cancellation when more than one stamp is placed on a small envelope. A business man recently received a letter on which the postage was IJd. Three halfpenny jubilee stamps had been affixed to the envelope and they stretched almost completely across the top. The two right-hand stamps bore ordinary post office cancellation marks, but the one on the left had been cancelled by being marked with an indelible pencil. The recipient of the letter is wondering whether he possesses a philatelic oddity. Notable Catch.
The condition of the Tongariro River was again unsuitable for fishing on Thursday owing to rain, and the ViceRegal party fished the Pouto River.' The total catch for three rods was 39 fish. The Governor-General, Viscount Galway, took the limit of 15 fish, Viscountess Galway secured 11, and fin Standish O’Grady Roche, naval aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, 13. The average weight of the total eaten was approximately 4|lb. Their Excellencies left camp at nine o’clock in the morning and did not return until six o’clock in the evening. Although the weather has been unsuitable lor fishing during their stay, it is considered that they have been more successful than any party that has visited the camp for some time. Thursday’s catch is probably a record for the district for three rods. Suspected Plural Voting.
There is no prospect of the result of the Auckland Transport Board poll being declared until next week, according to the returning officer, Mr. \V. St. J. Clarke, who is occupied with the task of investigating the cases ol apparent dual voting. Ihe new activity follows on the elaborate scrutiny of the rolls, which had been in progress for more than a week. The apparent cases of plural voting were stated to exceed 500, although the exact figure has not been determined. The procedure now in hand is to discover the voting papers of those electors who are believed to have voted more than once, in itself an elaborate task, requiring tho discovery of each voting paper to compare with the counterfoil. Probably many of the cases where plural voting has been suspected will prove to be unfounded, but it is considered that there is a prospect of important changes in the provisional results.
