Waipukurau School Functions

PORTRAITS PRESENTED From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, May 10. At the Waipukurau District High School this afternoon and St. Joseph’s Convent School, treeplanting and portrait presentation ceremonies in connection with the King’s Jubilee were held.

la addition to the teachers, scholars and other visitors, the Mayor (Mr 1. W. N. Mackie), the Mayoress (Mrs Mackie), and Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., were present and participated in the functions.

The visitors were welcomed by the headmaster (Mr E. E. C. Boyes). In the course of his address Mr Jull said that it was a great tribute to the British constitution that they were able to meet under such happy circumstances to celebrate the 25th anniversary of t,he reign of His Majesty the King. He added that the totara tree to be planted by the Mayoress would be of special historical significance, and would be noted by succeeding generations.

The Mayor stated that the Jubilee celebrations committee had fittingly decided to present to the Waipukurau District High School two portraits of the King and Queen, for the secondary and primary departments, also to St. Joseph’s Convent School. The pictures were then presented by the Mayoress. Esther Ganderton and Nola Mathieson suitably acknowledged the gifts on behalf of the pupils.

Mr W. G. Cook expressed appreciation on behalf of the school committee.

The commemoration tree was planted in the school grounds by the Mayoress. Those assembled gave cheers for the King and Queen, and for the Mayoress. At the secondary department of the Waipukurau District High School this morning a tree-planting ceremony was held to commemorate the jubilee of His Majesty King George V. A tree donated by Joan Smyrk, a pupil, was planted, the donor performing the planting after a short introductory address befitting the occasion, by Mr. L. R. Cutforth. After the planting, cheers were given for the donor and for Their Majesties. The tree planted was a scarlet oak.

This afternoon also a ceremony in celebration of the Jubilee was held at the Waipukurau St. Joseph’s Convent School. A picture donated by the Jubilee Committee was presented to the school by the Mayor, and a memorial tree given by Mr L. G. Harker, was planted by the Mayoress.
