COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
Hastings Committee Meeting FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER The first committee meeting of the newly-formed Hastings Competitions Society was held last night, the Rev. R. B. Gosnell presiding. The dates for the first festival were fixed, the function to take place from September 3 to September 6, both days being inclusive. This fixture, it was stated, did not claeh with the competitions to be held at either Gisborne or Hawera.
Consideration was given to the question of the appointment of judges, it being -decided to invite Mr du Maunay and Madame du Maunay, of Wellington. to adjudicate for the vocal and instrumental sections. Mr G. Kirk, of Wellington, is to be invited to adjudicate in the elocutionary section. It was agreed that in the dancing section that fancy and folk-dancing be separated from national dancing. Miss Stock, of Hawera, is to be invited to adjudicate in the former, while a judge for the latter has yet to be eelected.
A feature is to bo made of choir singing at the festival, and a separate class is to be provided for Maori choirs. It is felt this will he a worthy attraction in which splendid talent will compete.
The financial position of the society was considered sufficient to warrant steps being taken to have it incorporated.
