ANNUAL CLOTHES DRIVE
Appeal by the Mayor
NEED OF ASSISTANCE The annual drive for -clothing, bedding, etc., will be undertaken by the members of the Hastings Rotary Glut) on Monday next, the 13th instant, commencing at 9 a.m. und calls will be made at every house in the borough for parcels. “Moy I appeal to our citizens to respond as generously as possible to the appeal, for undoubtedly the need is a very substantial and urgent one,’’says the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison. “Although the rate of relief pay has been slightly increased, it is totally inadequate to provide the men, women and children with sufficient clothing, be! ding, etc. There are also many aged und s’lek people, and pensioners, who are necessarily dependent on our charitable service. “I cannot do better than repeat tie words of His Majesty King George V. in his Jubilee message to his people when he said, ‘ln the midst of this day’s rejoicing I. grieve to th’ink of the numbers of my people who are still without work. We owe to them and not least to those who are suffering from some form of disablement, all the sympathy and help that we eau give. I hope that during the Jubilee year all who can will do their utmost te find them -work, and to- bring them hope. ’ “I hope, therefore, that the citzens will give a full response to this appeal, and also will do their best to provide as much employment us possible during the winter months for those people who are unfortunately without jobs. “The people in the country who ha\e parcels of clothing, bedding, fruit, vegetables, etc., to give, may lease them at the Good Chee Depot at the corner of Lyndon and Warren streets, Hastings. ’ ’
