Napier Defeats Gisborne INNINGS AND 72 RUNS A win to Napier by an innings and 72 runs was the result of the annual cricket match between the Napier and Gisborne High Schools, which was concluded at Nelson Park on Saturday. Continuing their innings from Friday, Napier declared in their first strike at 203 for eight wickets. Gisborne fared badly in their first innings to finish up with 82, and, following on, were all out in their second innings for 49. In Napier’s first innings Morrissey headed the scoring with 51, and was followed by Johnson with 41 and a numoer of lesser double figures. The Gisbcrne captain, Cederwall, secured the best bowling average, four wickets tor 38. Toroa was the only Gisborne batsman to pass 20 in the first innings, knocking up 22 before he went to t, ball from Adams. The collapse of the Gisborne side afforded the Napier bowlers some flattering averages—Adams five for 31, Johnson four for 27, and Morrissey one for six. Only two Gisborne batsmen achieved double figures in the second innings; they were Cederwall 13 and Redstone 11. The Napier bowling averages were again excellent: Adams took six for 18. DINNER IN THE EVENING The visiting team was entertained at dinner at the Trocadero on Saturday evening. Mr W. T. Foster, headmaster of the Napier Boys’ High School, welcomed the Gisborne boys and their manager, Mr Fraser. He said that the game had been played in a fine spirit and had been a very enjoyable one. The boys looked forward to these inter-school matches with great pleasure, and were always glad of a visit from the Gisborne boys. He thanked those parents and friends of the school who had assisted by billeting the boys. He also thanked the umpires for their services Air Foster then handed to Adams, one of the Napier High School players, a splendid sheath donated by a great supporter for the best fielding. He was glad to note that on the whole, the fielding on both sides had been very good. Mr Fraser, manager of the Gisborne team, thanked Mr Foster for his kind remarks, and the people of Napier for their hospitality. Owing to isolation the annual matches with the Napier school were the only outside matches placed, and the boys looked forward to them with very great plea sure indeed, as also their visits to Napier. The Gisborne High School ria' ed inter-school football matches with both the Napier and Hastings High Schools, but in cricket the Napier matches were rhe only ones. These competitions had been going on for IS ' ears, and Napier had won 11 times, Gisborne six and the first game played had been a draw. He congratulated Napier High School upon their victory, and said it gave him great pleasure to hand over the cup to the Napier captain, Morrissey. Gisborne had held Iho cup three years in succession, and it was time it changed hands. The two captains, Cederwall (Gisborne) and Morrissey (Napier) each made short speeches.’ A very excellent repast was provided by the Trocadero, and th* function was a 'cry enjoyable one.
