HASTINGS TRACK NOTES

By

“The Barb.")

Yesterday morning the Hasting* tracks were slightly busier than they have been of late, the approaching Napier Park meeting, which commences on .Saturday, supplying the reason. oo* The tracks were in good order, but owing tn the recent rain were a little on the dead side. Where not specified the following trials took place on the inside grass gallop. • * e Vainsborough (J- Walsh) and Fernlea were companions over a six fur long gallop, but lhe latter was no use whatever to her galloping mate, who was always five nr six lengths out in front under a very strong pull. The time, 1.24, was slow. Vainsborough is an improver and one that may surprise any day now. • e » Highgrader (J. Walsh) and Royal Feast (L. Goodwin), just in from the farm, were sprinted five furlongs to register the very fair time of 65jsecs. If anything, Highgrader impressed the more. This gelding will be ridden by J. Walsh in the Highweights at Napier. • • • Drumpeel (P. Atkins) and Flamingo (J. Leach) were companions in n four furlong gallop, running 54Jsecs., but. ns the time indicates, this pair were not fully extended. • s • Another pair of G. Greene's in Count Willonyx (P. Atkins) and Bly gain (J. Leach) were given a working gallop, taking 1.22 J to cover six furlongs. Both of these, who each ran third at Woodville, appear to be in very forward condition. • • • Passion Flower (J. Leach) and the maiden candidate Hunting Cat (I’. Atkins) galloped four furlongs in 51j secs., ridden out with hands and heels and passing the winning post abreast. This was a fair effort, as the pace whs not really on over the first furlong. * * • Over the same distance Gold Mag (P. Atkins) and Contact (.1. Leach) registered 52Jsecs.—fair, as neither is at Ids best just yet. V «. « Tidal Song (H. Cullinan), carrying less than list., did the best short gallop of the morning, running fiOJsecs. The light, weight discounts the time some what, still the Tidal filly went well. • • • Four two-year-olds were galloped three furlongs in company and, none of the quartette being forward, shaped pleasingly. Shu (J. Olsen) Soho (P. Afkms), Hunting Chorus (J. Leach) and Tupai (11. Marsh) did the dis lance in 39Jsecs. Of these youngsters the best mover proved to bo Tupai, though that is not to say that he will prove the most productive stake earner later on. On the plough Gay Gift (J. Sheehan) and Cawbeen (R. Marsh) were togetnei at the end of five furlongs in (itisecs., which was very fair for this partticuJar track. Gay Gift is an untried four-year-old by Gainscourt from Gay Virginia and will have his first public outing at, Grcennieadows this weekend. Cawbeen has no immediate engagements. • • • Lady Wessex (A. Weaver) and Celerrimus (J. Olsen) did their mile gallop in 1.46 J and, as both were carrying 9st. or over, the gallop from a time point of view was fair. There was nothing to choose between the pair over the last furlong, but previous to that Celerrimus proved to have too much pace for the .Mercian King mare. • « • Father’s Choice was out, but restricted to trotting and cantering. This big three-year-old has decidedly lightened up by the trip and racing he had at Woodville. • » » Shirred Ribbon (Hall) and Trackman (J. Prendergast) took 1.35 to run their seven furlongs, the latter finishing ahead, but Shirred Ribbon was eased up slightly over the last furlong. • » * The Grasper was another that, was given an easy task. The big four-year-old looks lit, but will not. race this week-end. # * # Asturisca (P. Atkins) and Hunting Star (J. Olsen) were sent five furlongs lor the latter to be going “half pace” passing the winning post a couple of lengths in front in GHseus. Hunting Star was having his first gallop since coming in alter a spell and is still on the big side, although looking in cap) tai order to commence operations • n. w * * Lacquer (R. Marsh) and Potent (IL Boyle) accomplished a -very useful gal lop over live furlongs, running a tick under Gosucs.. the former just shading her elder working mate. Lacquer lool;s really well and a credit to trainer \V .1. King. She will make her first appearance under silk at Napier Park, and the experience gained there should see her about th end of March able to lak f> an active part in tbe finish of any juvenile handicap:

Peggy’s Joy (L. Berry), on the plough, was given two sharp sprints to run about Usees. to the furlong. She is hitting out more freely than when racing at Wairoa recently. • * * Blue Garter, a candidate for th. p ling Stakes on Saturday next, was given a light task only. This filly looks none the worse for her Woodville exertions last week, in fact, she looks all the better for her two races there. She will be ridden at NapieY by J. Leach. Charade (J. Sheehan) and De Trop (11. Marsh) were together at the end of live furlongs in 66secs., but De Trop was going the easier over the last half furlong. This was only to be expected, as Charade has not yet raced. * «• a Begorrah was given pace work and has cleaned up and done well by his one race at Woodville, when this two-year-old, after being slightly left through being barrier shy, ran a very encouraging race to finish right up on the placed horses. Slienanikida (J. Walsh) and Crow flight (Hall) left half a mile behind in 52secs., with the latter ridden out 10 do his task, ami it was a revelation to the younger school of horsemen to see the veteran, Hall, using the whip over the last furlong. -> # • Speed bus exercised on the sand. Prior to his working he was showing a decided limp behind, and after exercising the same was still in evidence, so maybe ho suffered some slight mishap in the greasy going at Woodville. 11 all depends how be improves whether he will take his place at Napier on Saturday. u • » Swift and Sure (E. Deslandes) was schooled once round over the hurdles. Over the first three fences he jumped up to standard, but over the others was very careless and slovenly. He has not jumped since racing at Woodville which may have been the reason for his poor display of fencing. • « • Queen’s Pride is lame am] appear to have suffered from the buffeting about she received over the first furlong at Woodville last Saturday. In that race she was ridden by J. Leach, who cannot be held responsible for the race she ran, as she was the victim of circumstance. As the race was nut he. had no alternative to riding any way other than he did. In Monday's “Tribune” it was stated that in the straight Queen's Pride was three lengths in front, but this should have read “three parts of a length.” • • • Solaria (.1. Leach) and the Warplane gelding (W. Wilton) were given barrier instruction under the custodian Mr. A. Holmes and for beginners both showed ability to leave the tapes smartly. Cuddle was not on the track and has been an absentee since Saturday. There is still a. slight filling in one of her forelegs, so that owner-trainer C. J. Stowe has decided to give her a. few days' respite from active work.
