NOTES FROM OTANE
Pastures in Need of Rain POPULAR KAIRAKAU BEACH Prom Our Own Correspondent OTANE, Jan. 7. The weather still continues to be extremely hot and dry and rain is urgently needed. Unfortunately Otane <l'l not participate in the beneficial rains which fell in so many parts of the Dominion last week. Many of the creeks in tho district are dry and the almost total absence of wind to drive the windmills has made the watering of stock on many farms a serious problem While the sheep farmer has many difficulties to contend with, the outlook for the dairy farmer is at present not at ail hopeful, and unless good rains are experienced soon the monetary returns for butterfat per cow promise this season to be the lowest on record. WHOOPING COUGH. There is still a considerable amount of whooping cough about, the very young children being the most seriously affected. • KAIRAKAU BEACH. Kairakau Beach is proving a very popular holiday resort this year, all the cottages and shacks being occupied, while quite a number of holiday makers are camped in tents. It is many years since the beach lias been in such good condition as it is at the present tuu”, the wide stretch of sand making it an ideal playing ground for young and old.
