LICENSED VICTUALLERS

Conference in Napier WELCOME TO DELEGATES A short address of welcome to delegates at the United Licensed Victuallers’ Association conference at Napier was given by the Mayor, Mr C. O. Morse, at tho Council Chambers this morning. In reply, the president, Mr J. W. Young, of Dunedin, said that, it was remarkable to seo the way in which the townspeople had overcome their difficulties, and the manner of their decision to make the town better than it was before tho earthquake. Mr Young said that tho conference was important if only because of the large number of people who were employed in the licensed trade, which was one of the largest employers of labour in the country. The trade was the channel through which a huge revenue was provided for the State and local bodies.

It w-as the endeavour of successive conferences to make the trade a credit to the Dominion, since it provided accommodation for thousands of people during the course of a single year.
