NAPIER HIGH SCHOOLS
The Principals’ Reports
A meeting of the Napier Secondary Schools Hoard was held in the Education Board's offices last night. Mr W. Dinwiddie presided over Messrs P. Ashcroft, 11. Anderson. W. Dawson, Al. L. Gleeson, the Revs. J. A. Asher and F. L. Erost and Miss Jerome Spencer.
The principals’ reports were adopted. Mr W. T. Foster, principal of the Boys’ High School, reported as follows upon the work of the school during the month "Roll number and attendance.— There was an average daily attendance for the month of 279 or 83 per cent. The low attendance towards the end of the term was entirely due to the epidemic of measles followed, in many cases, by influenza. The third form has opened with a nominal roll number of 335. I understand that one or two boys have obtained positions during the holidays, but so far 1 have not been notified by their parents. “Visit of inspectors. —1 have been notified that the secondary school inspectors will visit us from September 19 to 21 to look into senior free place recommendations and higher leaving certificates, etc.
“Football.—Our first fifteen journeyed ti> Palmerston North and played the local High School on August 15. After a very close game Palmerston won by six points to three. “School bell. —.Members of the board may remember that some time ago J brought up the question of the need for a school bell. The distance of the workshops from the central block is such that our hand-bell cannot reach. I should very much like to instal a system of electric bells to connect with the workshops while still using the hand-bell for the main block. The boys could do ail the work necessary, but the equipment that would have to be bought would cost about £4. The difficulties caused by failure to hear the bell are such that some new system is really required.
“Evening classes. —The evening; classes recommenced on Monday the 10th. Owing to very bad weather the opening attendances were rather small, but should now be back to normal. AH work is proceeding steadily according to schedule.
“Scinde House. —One boarder has left, but a new one has come in for a few weeks. The health and conduct of all has been entirely satisfactory.”
'The principal of the Girls’ High School, Miss 1). M. Arthur, reported as follows:—
“Tlie roll. —Tlie senior school roll is 219, the same as last month, but several girls who have not been officially withdrawn may be leaving school. One new pupil was enrolled. The average attendance is negligible, as this is only the third day of school since the term began. The junior school numbers show a decrease, and there arc now only I: ehildren in that department, two hav mg gone away to boarding school ’
