NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Wanganui Meeting

(By

“The Barb.”)

Hastings-trained horses again ran prominently at Wanganui on Saturday, and on the trip did as well, if not better, than most of the visiting horses to that meeting.

Shu (Hunting Song—Hathor) failed to finish in the first five in the two-year-old race. This youngster ran very green, but the trip and racing experience should do him the world of good.

• * * In this race Entail (prosperity—Episode) was considered by many to be “the goods,” and being coupled with the Marton winner, Severe, made the combination appear most formidable. Although Severe ran second, Entail ran a very poor race, and never at any part ot the race did he look a likely winner. • • » The winner, Legatee, gave Posterity (imp.) his first winning representative m the Dominion. This colt improved greatly with his Marton experience, and as he is nowhere near right, is almost sure to develop into a very fair winner this season. * • Lady Ruler (Chief Ruler—Tinowiri) is another that considerably improved by her race at the same meeting, and she, too, has plenty of room tor improvement. • * « The Hawke’s Bay-owned Rompalong (Chief Ruler —Queen’s Ferry), and Round Up (Lord Quex —Nukerukau), the property ol Mr. A. W. Symes, are backward and will do better later in handicap juvenile events, Mr. F. Ormond s Sergia, a bay filly by Lord Quex—Sunny Hours, is another that lacks experience at the present, but promises to come right with a little more time. ♦ • • Sir Nigel, who won the Trial Handicap was always in the picture, and at the finish won comfortably from Whetuma, who ,for second place, returned the best price of the meeting. Sir Nigel appears to have come back to his form of some time back. This event J. M. Cameron also wou a few years back with that good galloper, Hunting Cry. » • Htikemanu ran a very creditable race to collect third money, whilst another trained Hastings horse in Royal Feast was fourth, thus out of the four placings three hailed from here. The Wanganui Guineas saw all the three best backed horses in the money, and allhough the Bay was not represented we had the consolation of seeing a Hastings horseman piloting the winner, Pin Money (Paper Money—Vicerine), who goes back on his dam’s side to Kuramu stud stock. # * «• Burnish (Potnbal —Episode!, a full -ister to Epigram, was third, but this filly was very unlucky in the running, and it appears that with better luck she must have won. Mother Superior (Chief Ruler —Dovelet) showed a decided improvement on her running of the first day, and can be expected from now on to show more improvement. • • ■’ Tiger Gain, with a change of horsemen, ran a far better race to win the Higgle Handicap nicely. The first day he was allowed to dispute the lead all the way, but on Saturday R. Marsh had him tucked in behind the leaders, and over the last furlong and a half the Gainscourt gelding asserted his superiority to win decisively from Cartex. The big disappointment of this race was the first day’s winner, Passion Fruit, who ran just a sbadly as he did well the first day. Lalla Quex is another improver t-hat in the immediate future, in a middle distance race, can be expected to show up. Plateau again ran a fair race, but is nowhere back to last season’s form. * « * Midiau, the four-year-old Weathervane—Rebekah horse, was not too well backed for the Hack Plate, but succeeded in winning the handsome trophy attached to this event. If # # Cyclonic was again forced to put up with second position, but no excuse can bo offered for his defeat, albeit that the distance may he a little too far for the Hunting Song—Cymene four-year-old. s r a Although Blue Boy finished about fifth or sixth, he ran a capital race. He was in the middle of the ficrid at the start and failing to get the jump out was squeezed, in the early stages, right back to last. When he finally got out of the bother it was too late, but from then on he put in a great run. » « a Rereatu after his four seconds on end, richly deserved his win in the Owen Handicap. see Another Papei Money in Rerepai accounted for the final event of the meeting and won convincingly from the Hawke’s Bay-bred Courtega (Grandcourt—Tigritiya). o « Marsong, who was taken through from here to contest the maiden events at the Wanganui meeting, was not started on the trip . The day before the meeting she was galloped three furlongs, which she did in very last time, but unfortunately for her connections after galloping this three she galloped another two rounds, which naturally “knocked” her lor the trip, so the scratching pen. was put through her name.
