TWO MEN IN A BOAT

Washed Out to Sea

DRIFT FOR 18 HOURS

(By To’ograph—Press Association.)

WHAKAIANE, Sept. 18

After drifting helplessly in a calm sea for 18 hours in a nine-toot flatbottomed boat without water or food of any description, two Auckland men, Robert Lamb, aged 50 years, and James Holden, aged 24 years, managed to reach shore 14 miles from their starting point little the worse for their experience.

The two men endeavoured to cross the Tarawera river at the mouth at midnight ou Saturday but were carried over the bar. With no oars to propel or guide them, only a titree pole, they were washed out to sea. The boat drifted for seven miles to near the Rurima Islands, then up the coast in the vicinity of Plate Island. Finally the tide again turned and carried the wanderers near shore, and with the aid of a seat for a paddle they contrived to reach the beach 11 miles from where they were first washed out to sea, after having drifted helplessly for about 18 hours.
