FINALITY AT LAST.

The visit of the Minister of Health to Hastings a few weeks back gave the people of that town fairly full assurance that their long deferred hopes with respect to the extension of their hospital would now be fulfilled. There have, however, in this connection been so many quirks and twists and turns made and so many lastminute difficulties raised that it cannot but be welcome news to learn that the last formality in the way of securing ministerial ■consent has now been complied with. An announcement to this effect was made by the chairman at yesterday’s meeting of the Napier Hospital Board. The necessary expenditure may now be taken to have been fully authorised and provided for, and nothing remains but some small readjustments with the contractor before he will be able to put the necessary work in hand. This is a happy result of many years of persistent striving and, while it is still a little difficult to understand why it should have been so long postponed, Hastings citizens may yet congratulate themselves upon it. On their behalf we feel we shall be quite safe in joining with the Hastings representatives on the Board in extending recognition to the chairman for the energy he has shown in bringing the later phases of negotiation to a successful conclusion. Mr. Morse has spared no effort in his desire to expedite matters and for this the sincere thanks of the community are due to him.
