NAPIER DEFEATS HASTINGS MARGIN OF ONE GOAL. An even and interesting game took place between Napier and Hastings Soccer representatives at Cornwall Park, Hastings, on Saturday. The Napier team consisted mainly of the Hawke’s Bay representatives that did so well against Wairarapa, and the Hastings players were chosen from Hastings United and Whakatu. The game was fast throughout, Hastings having a shade the better of things during the first spell, the Napier team settling down to serious work aftei the interval, to wiu out by the odd goal in seven The teams were as follow.— Napier. — Hawthorne (Wanderers), Young (Y.M.C.A.), Henderson (Y.M.C.A.), Cullen, (Y.M.C.A.), Gosling, (Factory), Brian, (Y.M.C.A.), Durie (Y.M.C.A.), Nicholson, (Y.M.C. The ball striking the top of the upright. From the goal kick Hastings got away and good combination between Cawson and D Penman to Brehaut, who centred well lor Sawyer to collect on the run. His shot struck the net just behind the post. Hustings kept up the pressure lor übout IQ minutes when Leicester, with a long drive, hit the post. Napier retaliated and good play by their right wing allowed Durie to drive again, lus shot missing only by inches. Another raid by Napier gamed a corner, which was abortive, off-side play robbing them of the ball. Brian then secured and with a hard drive, made Lancaster’s lingers tingle. However, he cleared well to McAleese, who set Brehaut off on a run along the wing, passing to D. I’enman m good position, the latter being tackled in tho nick of time by Henderson, who cleared well down the field lor Napier to attack strongly. Gosling was playing well at this stage, breaking up Basting’s movements and keeping his forwards busy Nicholson and Durie made a great wing and most ot Napier's attack was from this wing. A line centre by Durie tc Smith lii front of the goal was lost by a second’s hesitation on Smith’s part. From tins let-off, Sawyer got sway and centred lor D. Penman to herd into the goal, but Hawthorne brouglit off a fine save. Alter a steady attack by Hastings D. Penman took advantage of slackness in defence and scored with a fine low left-toot drive, which struck a defenders foot and completely beat the goal-keeper.—Hastings I, Napier 0. Right from the centre Hastings went off again McAleese and Brehaut, forcing matters and centering beautifully, allowed D. Penman to pick up on the run and score another fine goal. —Hastings 2. Napier 0. Shortly after the kick-off, Napier were awarded a free kick, which took them in front of the Hastings goal, and a short pass to Smith permitted him to beat Lancaster easily from close in.—Napier 1. Hastings 2. Play was now vdry fast and only the good defence of Young and Henderson staved off the Hastings attacks. P. Lowe tried a hard drive, but a defender got in the way and deflected the ball, the resultant corner being cleared. Durie then had another try, but his shot went wide. Half time sounded with Hastings pressing. Hastings ... ... ... 2 Napier 1 Hastings attacked right from tho centre kick and D. Penman, with u great shot under the bar, completely beat Hawthorne.—Hastings 3, Napier 1. Brehaut with another great shot tested Hawthorne, who made a fine save. Hastings was playing well at this stage but it was not to last. Napier gradually wearning them down and ultimately nullifying all their attacks. Cullen was now getting the measure of his tricky opponents, McAleese and Brehaut, and was plying his forwards frequently with likely opportunities. Lancaster was prominent in saving two shots in quick succession from Nicholson and Zacho, Hawthorne a few minutes afterwards distinguishing himself by saving two hard drives from the Penman brothers. Brian at left half for Napier, was a tower or strength to his team. It was mainly through his efforts that Napier got the upper hand. A fine run by Nicholson and Durie took them right up to Hastings penalty area, where Nicholson, with a piece of clever manoeuvering in front of goal, scored witn a nice low drive.—Napier 2, Hashings 3. Give-and-tako play took place, but ultimately Napier forced matters, and their right wing gained two corners from Lancaster’s saves, the second taken accurately by Durie to Smith, who, with a fine shot, scored again for Napier.—Napier 3, Hastings 3. From the centre Hastings tore off down the field and it was only by tho line goal-keeping of Hawthorne that a score did not tako place. Lowe and Zaclio took play back again to Hastings territory, Zacho centering well, and fast following up by Gosling brought him into position for a hard drive that went between the goalkeeper's legs.—Napier 4, Hastings 3. Excitement was caused when D. Penman, with a terrific shot, seemed to have the redoubtable Hawthorne beaten, and though he could not hold the shot, his second effort was successful and he cleared well, amid applause. His clearance allowed Young, Gosling and Nicholson to race away, the latter’s shot going over Hastings now made desperate efforts to even the score, both Sawyer and Cawson having good tries. Smith just missed another score from a cross-kick from Durie, ami the game ended with Napier pressing. The final score was— Napier ... ♦ Hastings • « Mr Lambert refereed. PRIMARY SCHOOLS. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, September 16. The largest gathering to attend a soccer match in Wellington since the Chinese team’s visit in 1924 saw Thistle (Auckland) defeat Thistle (Christchurch) by two goals to one in the Chatham Cup final. The game was made the occasion of a Scottish celebration, pipers and Highland dancers entertaining the crowd. The Governor General and Lady Bledisloe were present, the former presenting the cup to the Auckland team. The match was not so good as some of the previous contests, but nevertheless it was fast and exciting. There was little betwen the teams, but credit must go to Auckland, who played a man short throughout the second spell through McCosh, the captain and right back, injuring a leg. Adam scored for Christchurch in the first spell; and in the second Sutherland, the Christchurch goalie, in attempting to clear, deflected the ball into his own not. Wood also scored.
