AMATEUR BOXING CHAMPIONS

Winners of Eight Divisions to Date

The official list of New Zealand amateur champions dates back to 1902 when the Christchurch Sports Club conducted an amateur tourney that was given official recognition by the New Zealand Boxing Council, which body, incidentally, was more or less a Christchurch organisation. In that year only the featherweighi, lightweight and heavyweight divisions were contested, but the following year bantamweight and middleweight were added to the programme. It was not until five years later that recognition was given to welters, and the flyweights and light-hea,vies were not accepted as separate classes until 1922, so completing the full range as is recognised to-day. A perusal of the list of champions reveals that it is from the featherweights of the past that have sprung some of the most renowned boxers of later years.
