The average British car is of 12.6 horse-power, does 7000 miles a year, carries an average of two passengers on each journey, and pays in taxation £2 6s lOd per horse-power. It is the most heavily taxed car in the world. Austria, Italy, and France are the only other countries where taxes exceed the equivalent of £2 per horse-power. There is now one vehicle to every 27 of the population of the United kingdom. The number of cars registered in the world fell last year owing to conditions in the United States, but the Empire’s share of the toal rose from 11.7 to 12.1 per bent.
